How to transform an urban development program into an urban project?

Brive-la-Gaillarde is a city experiencing a decline in growth. Despite significant large-scale infrastructure works, the city is losing residents and struggling to attract new ones. The city lacks visibility and an appealing identity. More than just a simple development, it deserves a true project that is powerful, radical, and sustainable. Our proposal brings a new amenity to public spaces, a new way of living that is more flexible, fluid, and surprising.

The 5 developed squares are based on the trace of 18th-century layouts. We offer to restore the original proportion and scale of the Grand Place to the Collegiate Church’s parvis, which we adorn with a slate floor from Allassac. The size of the stones and the color of the slate create a base that enhances the building and religious ceremonies. This base extends towards Place Latreille, which evokes the scale of the Petite Place. A flower market hall is created as an extension of the single house adjacent to the Collegiate Church, connecting the two Places.

The slate base of the Grand Place also extends to the south and east of the Collegiate Church. The opus incertum becomes vegetal, suggesting the tranquility of the Priory Garden and the cloister. Exterior reading lounges are placed there, facing the media library.

A « Grande Rive » welcomes pedestrian flows and anchors the neoclassical building of the media library. The generosity of its proportions allows for temporary markets, Christmas markets, and a mobile library. The northeast corner of the « Rive » opens onto the Town Hall square. In line with the entrance peristyle, a « Carreau d’Honneur » showcases the façade of the Doctrinaires’ College and the access to the town hall. The simple geometry of the structure reorients and hierarchizes the space, with the Town Hall as the centerpiece. The « Jardin des Doctrinaires » extends the garden leading to the technical services, providing breathing space between the Town Hall and the Halle square and offering much-needed freshness during summer wedding ceremonies.

The Halle square, first freed from cumbersome urban furniture, is covered with a new floor. In its center, an octagonal « Kiosque » responds to the faceted architecture of the neighboring buildings and offers a privileged performance space for the students of the Music School. Facing the Collegiate Church, it creates an attraction for the Halle square and gives it a centripetal reading.
